Abstract
Abstract
Objective: The emergence and expansion of new media among various nations have created or intensified new issues and challenges. Consequently, the concept of celebrity has gained significance, and commenting on various topics—be they political, economic, cultural, scientific, experiential, historical, or health-related—has become meaningful without the need for expertise, turning into a form of specialization. This trend parallels the relationship between media and poets, orators, and sophists during Plato's time; thus, this research critically examines the specialization of new media through a Platonic lens.
Methodology: This research first extracts and interprets Platonic assertions from his dialogues regarding sophistry, poetry, and rhetoric. It then employs philosophical analysis to gain insights into media activities in general, and similarly compares them with contemporary celebrities in new media, subjecting them to critique and evaluation.
Findings: The Platonic critique of media occurs in two stages. The first stage evaluates media in absolute terms, revealing that media possess characteristics of knowledge representation, audience stimulation, and entertainment. In the second stage, the evaluation focuses specifically on new media, demonstrating that these platforms create an environment for virtual deceit, sycophancy, and manipulation of audiences, lawlessness, and madness.
Discussion and Conclusion: The lack of expertise in new media and the notion that celebrities are not scholars are highlighted, along with legal warnings. It concludes that specialization in new media has led to the emergence of a false plurality in the world. Therefore, modern media has the same identity as other media in terms of gender, but in terms of linguistic tools, it has become more intense, and criticism can be continued based on Aristotle's opinion and educational and entertainment platforms can be followed in modern media. It is in this way that philosophy can study new media and celebrity phenomenon.
